Do we really ever learn from our mistakes
Do we really ever learn from our mistakes?
There have been so many times that I have been lied to and yet I still refuse to give up believing in people.
I feel scared, gun shy, and doubtful.
I approach with caution, yet I still believe.
Over and over again, people have lied.
The first time, someone takes advantage of me, it is their fault
The second time, it is mine.
Do we really ever learn from our mistakes?
Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
by Portia Nelson
I. I walk down the street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in, I am lost…I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes me to find my way out forever.
II. The same street I’m walking down.
The curb has a deep hole in it.
I pretend I can’t see it, I just fall back in.
I can’t believe that I’m in the same place.
But it’s not the fault of me.
It always takes a long time for me to get outside.
III. The same street I’m walking down.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it there, I still fall in…It’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
IV. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
V. I walk down another street.
Learning from Your Mistakes
When you finally learn a lesson from your bad choices, time and experience can be great teachers. Experience comes from our way of life, awareness, and the improvements we make. It is also the product of pain, misery, and the ordeals that afflict us.
Just think back to your last mistake at work. Even if it was a slight one, you’ll probably have felt a wave of fear and then had the annoyance of putting everything right, including spilling coffee on a paper seconds before you were supposed to present it.No one is prone to errors-after all, we’re human! But if we just apologize and carry on as before, we run the risk of making the same mistakes.
Growth begins as soon as you realize your mistake and how to stop it from happening again. It’s natural for everyone to make mistakes in life, but how you learn from them is how you improve your judgment. Learning is the best way to stop making a mistake a second time. If you don’t, you’ll constantly make the same mistake before you’re forced to think.
It is a perfect embodiment of the meaning that comes with learning from our errors. And it’s a good overview of how we learn from our mistakes in one way. We’re trying something. We’re making a call. And that doesn’t work the way it was meant to. Then we gain insight and understand that we can do something else or make a different decision next time we are in that situation.
For learning to work and live smarter, learning from your mistakes is important. But it’s not enough to just learn next time to behave differently. The best way to learn from your mistakes is first to figure out why you made the error.
Life is going on all the time, and all around us, so we can learn a lot if we start paying attention. The biggest lesson sometimes is who we don’t want to be or what we don’t want to do. In our lives, we all have the power to make choices and we pay the price when we make choices void of thinking or knowledge.
We save ourselves a lot of time and grief as we make decisions based on impressions of the achievements or shortcomings of other people. When we can learn to stay clear of possible issues that we know and see played out in the lives of other people, we can escape a lot of the chaos of life.
